The Closure

img_1170-copy

She gazes at the stool,
picturing his brief rest
on it yesterday, tapping
his fingers on the leg
before saying goodbye
Her impulse to kick it
replaces it with a plant
with various hearts
Promise of fidelity yielded
to the seasons gone by
She disdains the absurdity
yet lets the old fervor linger
in the years he has discarded
Then she will sing for tomorrow
